Working at WorkMonitor

Build the tool that has to hold up on both sides of the screen.

WorkMonitor records how work actually happens — the hours, the output, the activity tying the two together. Capturing that is the easy half. The job is building a record a manager will act on and the person it describes can take apart.

What you would be building

Every screen answers to two people

Most tools in this category are built for whoever holds the budget. That half is easy. The hard half — and the reason the work is worth doing — is that the same record has to survive the person it describes reading it, in words nobody needed training to understand.

So features arrive in pairs. You design both views, and you say plainly when only one of them holds up.

Who is working, on what, right now. Every figure opens into the parts it is made of, because a number nobody can take apart is a number nobody should act on.

How hiring works here

No vacancy list means no closing date, and no queue you are already at the back of.

A role opens when the work needs one, not when a quarter turns. An introduction sent today is read the same way as one sent the week a post appears.

What to put in it

The bar

What the work demands, and what it never counts

Both columns come straight out of the product’s own argument. A company that builds the thing which counts activity has no business running itself on activity.

Demanded, every time

  • Writing, before talking

Remote-first means the decision lives in a document somebody eight hours behind you can read on their own. Much of this job is working out what a number means and then saying it in one sentence.

  • Evidence attached

In the product, every score opens into the parts it is made of. Arguments here arrive the same way, or they do not carry.

  • The other side of the screen

Every feature is reviewed from the position of the person being measured, while there is still time to change it rather than defend it.

  • Restraint

Surface the few things that matter, not everything that moves. A good week often ends with something we decided not to capture.

Never counted, here or in the product

  • Hours at the keyboard

We build the thing that counts them, which is exactly why we know how little they prove on their own.

  • Being seen to be online

No credit accrues for a green dot at a particular hour. What you shipped and what you wrote down is the record.

  • Volume

A count of tickets closed says nothing about whether the right thing was built.

  • Certainty in the room

Being sure is cheap. Showing the working is not, and it is the only one of the two that settles anything.

The terms

How the company works, stated once

Not a benefits brochure. 6 terms, and what each one means on an ordinary Tuesday.

Remote-first, always
No office to be seen in, and no credit for being seen in one. Home-office and co-working stipends stand in.
Real ownership
Equity for every employee. You build it, you own part of it.
Learning budget
A yearly budget for courses, conferences and books. Spend it without asking anyone.
Health & wellness
Health cover, mental-health support and a monthly wellness credit.
Time that is truly off
Unlimited leave with a company-wide minimum, because the floor is the half that binds. Recharge weeks on top.
Meet in real life
Team offsites and one gathering a year, paid for.

Where the work is

The disciplines this product is built from

Nothing here is a post you can apply to. It is the shape of the work: 9 disciplines and the 18 crafts inside them. Find the word that describes what you do, and use it when you write.

Write to us before there is a vacancy

Send something that can be read in five minutes. Three things make it easy to place you, and the third is the one we read first.

  1. 01One thing you have built, and what changed for whoever had to use it.
  2. 02Which of the disciplines above is yours, and which part of the work you would want.
  3. 03One thing on this site you would argue with.
