How we ship updates

WorkMonitor's web app updates itself the moment we ship an improvement; the desktop agent is a separate download you install for each new release.

The web app

The dashboard you sign in to is a hosted product. When we ship an improvement, it's already there the next time you load the page. There's nothing to download, nothing to click to update, and no version number to keep track of.

The desktop agent

The agent that actually captures activity on your computer works differently. It's a program you download, install, and sign into, and it keeps running on your machine on its own from then on. Getting a newer build means downloading it again from the Get the agent screen. The agent doesn't update itself in the background today.

That screen always shows whichever signed build is currently available for your operating system, with its version number, file size, and whether it's code-signed and notarized. Open it and sign in with your work email. That's the whole setup. It registers your machine to you automatically, so there's nothing to copy across by hand.

What "published to this workspace" means

A signed build has to be published before the Get the agent screen can offer it as a real download for that operating system. Until one is, the screen says so plainly instead of showing a button that doesn't work: *"The signed [operating system] installer isn't published to this workspace yet. Once it's out you'll just download and sign in. Need it today? Build from source below."* There is a Build from source path underneath, for anyone who wants the agent before a signed build ships.

Right now, a signed build is published for macOS. Windows and Linux aren't published yet, so those two show the message above rather than a download button.

What this means for you

  • Nothing to do for the web app: you're always on the current version.
  • For the desktop agent, check the Get the agent screen if you want to know whether a newer build is out, and download it again to move up. There's no separate update notification yet. The screen itself is the source of truth.
  • The Your devices list on the same screen shows every device enrolled anywhere in your workspace, each with the version it last connected with, so you can see at a glance who's on what.
